chris johnson

Start of the Week

I normally do not advocate a player in this column who should be starting for you on a weekly basis, but this week I am going to make an exception. Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson was most likely drafted high in your league and should be started on a weekly basis except in the most extreme of matchups.

If you owned Johnson in a standard yardage-league this year, he has rewarded you with 146 fantasy points. But notice that he  has rewarded 107 of those points in three weeks. What about the rest of the weeks?

He produced only 39 points in five weeks, but that was when the team as a whole was losing. So, if you're scared of his inconsistency, fear no more. The good news is two of those three outburst weeks have come in Week Eight and Nine, which was after the Titans’ bye.

It appears that the Titans have turned a corner and have ratcheted up their offense and there is no reason to believe the Tennessee offense will revert to what is was in the run game. Go ahead and ride him out the rest of the season. You may want to trade him if your fantasy playoffs are in weekend 16 and/or Week 17 when he plays San Diego and Seattle respectively.

If your playoffs end then, you may want to ride him this week versus an incredible matchup vs. the Buffalo Bills. After that, try trading him for another No. 1 running back. One that comes to mind would be Atlanta Falcons RB Michael Turner. He has great matchups in Week 16 and Week 17.

Quarterbacks to Start

If you have one of the top six or seven quarterbacks, you are going to start them in all but the most extreme matchups. However, if you don’t, you will look to employ the QBBC approach. This week two lesser-considered options have good matchups. If you need a bye week replacement, or are looking to shake it up in the QBBC approach consider these two quarterbacks.

The first is Carolina Panthers QB Jake Delhomme. Delhomme has not been a model of consistency. In fact, he has played horribly often this season. While I do not expect 20 plus fantasy points from him, hiis matchup versus the Atlanta Falcons is still pretty good this week.

Over the past three games, Atlanta has given up six touchdowns passing and 826 yards to quarterbacks. It is likely Delhomme can put up similar numbers as Washington Redskins QB Jason Campbell did last week, when he played the Falcons. In standard yardage leagues, Delhomme is capable of a 12-15 point week.

The other QBBC match up is Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford. This week the Lions play the Minnesota Vikings, who, this season, have given up 2,083 passing yards and 13 touchdowns. Minnesota is coming off a bye and I expect them to play a little better than these numbers suggest because of the time off. If your league penalizes you for interceptions, then Stafford is not the guy you want. I expect him to throw a few. I do think Stafford can post 200 passing yards and a touchdown.

Running Backs to Start

Running Back Larry Johnson owners must be unhappy with him being released by the Kansas City Chiefs. Hopefully, over the last two weeks you have taken the time to pick up his backup Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles. I expect there to be a committee approach to the running back situation in Kansas City. Charles is the starter. He is also a decent back who can catch the ball out of the backfield. If you need a bye week replacement or a flex option, Charles can be your guy. This week he plays the Oakland Raiders. Over their last two games, the Raiders have surrendered five touchdowns and 373 yards rushing. Look for Charles to be a decent start for those who need it.

The Cincinnati Bengals play at Pittsburgh this week. The Steelers have been known as a force to stop the run. Because of the matchup, it is tempting to sit Bengals RB Cedric Benson. I would not do it.

When you drafted Benson it was to be either as a RB2 spot or a bench slot. Despite this, Benson has delivered on value and performed well as a RB2. In fact, Benson is second in the NFL in rushing yards and he has already faced Baltimore twice, Pittsburgh once, plus Chicago and Denver. He has scored under 10 fantasy points only once this season. Even though the matchup suggests benching Benson, don’t do it. Put him in your RB2 spot and reap the benefits of a consistent performer.

Wide Receivers to Start

The Buffalo Bills have an offense that has underachieved this season. Despite this, there are times that Bills, WR Lee Evans can be a reasonable play. Week Two, Six and Seven showed that Evans could be a fantasy viable player. This week the Buffalo Bills will play the Tennessee Titans. While the Titans have come on since their bye, and I expect a non-exciting kind of outing from Bills QB Trent Edwards, I do think the numbers are there for Evans to produce this week as a low-end WR2 high end WR3. Give him a start in this capacity.

Another receiver not to give up on is St Louis Rams Donnie Avery. While he plays for a bad offense, he is still their No. 1 option and will be targeted as such. He had some injury issues but is coming off a bye where he had time to get healthy. This week St Louis plays the New Orleans Saints. Most of the football pundits will say that this game should be a blowout. If that is, indeed, what happens, St Louis will have to throw the ball often and will look for Avery to make plays. New Orleans has been giving up an average of 19.2 fantasy points per game in yardage leagues to WRs.

Tight Ends to start

Minnesota Vikings TE Visanthe Shiancoe faces the Detroit Lions this week. The Lions have been vulnerable to the tight end. Over their last two games, they have given up an average of 14.2 fantasy points per game. Brett Favre also likes to throw to his TE in the red zone. This looks like it will be a good week to start Shiancoe.

Just as Minnesota likes to throw to the tight end, they are also very vulnerable to opposing tight ends. This week the Vikings will face 2009 top rookie TE in the Lions' Brandon Pettigrew, who finally scored his first career touchdown last week. He should continue his effectiveness this week.

Sit of the Week

betts portisWashington Redskins RB Clinton Portis left Sunday’s game with a concussion. As is the case with most concussions, it is very unlikely he will play this week. Even so, the Denver Broncos are no easy matchup for running backs. Excluding Monday nights game, the Broncos had surrendered three touchdowns and 552 rushing yards.

It might actually be better if Portis does not have to play them and avoid the punishment the Broncos defense will give out. Sit Portis because of his injury. Sit Redskins RB Ladell Betts because the Broncos defense is good enough to shut down the Redskins running game.

Quarterbacks to Sit

Denver Broncos QB Kyle Orton will play the Washington Redskins this week. If you are playing the QBBC approach, you will want to avoid him this week. Orton has played well in stretches, but he has struggled lately versus tougher defenses. The Washington Redskins are a better pass defense than some may think. They are overlooked for the same reason a lot of the Tennessee Titans get overlooked. They have lost most of their football games. Last week Washington gave up seven fantasy points to Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan. If Washington can shut Ryan down, they should also be able to shut Orton down.

Jacksonville Jaguars QB David Garrard has played pretty well this season. However, he is susceptible to the occasional game where he just does not perform. He scored five fantasy points at Indianapolis, three at Seattle and three points at Tennessee. This week the Jaguars face a tough defense in the New York Jets. Over the last three weeks, the Jest have been first in the league with least fantasy points allowed to quarterbacks (12.1) in yardage leagues. The Jaguars also play the Jets in New York. This game has all the hints that suggest Garrard will underachieve this week. Sit him.

Running Backs to Sit

One player I have been critical of all season has been San Diego Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson. I have nothing personal against Tomlinson as he has led me to fantasy championships in the past. Tomlinson is 30-years-old and like most aging RBs should not be in your lineup. I repeat: he should not be in your lineup.

Tomlinson has not broken the 75-yard rushing mark all season and has only three rushing touchdowns (all three against the Oakland Raiders). Unfortunately, Tomlinson does not play the Raiders this week. Instead, he plays the Philadelphia Eagles, who over the last three weeks have surrendered 78 rushing yards per game. If this average holds somewhat close this week, Tomlinson will have to share those seven fantasy points with fellow Chargers RB Darren Sproles. I would find another option at running back.

Arizona has shifted completely to a RBBC. Week Eight saw Cardinals RB Tim Hightower have eight carries for 39 yards and Cardinals RB Chris Wells eight carries for 47 yards. Week Nine saw Hightower have 15 carries for 77 yards and Wells 13 carries for 72 yards. This drops both running backs to a flex option. This week the Cardinals will play the Seahawks defense. The last two games the Seahawks have surrendered 108.5 rushing yards with 0.5 touchdowns per game. Without the aid of a touchdown, these numbers indicate each running back should accumulate between five to seven fantasy points. It is likely you have better options. If you do, then keep this Cardinal duo on your bench.

Wide Receivers to Sit

One bright spot in Buffalo is their pass defense. This season they rank second in fantasy points allowed to wide receivers. In eight games, they have given up 74 receptions for 893 yards and one touchdown. This is bad news for a Titans' receiving corps that has yet to have a consistent receiver emerge.

So far this season Tennessee wide receivers Nate Washington (23), Justin Gage (22) and Kenny Britt (20) are all within three receptions of the team lead. With the lack of clarity at wider receiver, it is a huge risk starting any of these receivers verses the Bills secondary. I recommend you avoid them all.

I feel it is almost impossible to bench Falcons WR Roddy White. Even in bad weeks, he is the type of wide receiver who still fills a WR2 or flex spot well. This is the case this week versus the Carolina Panthers. This season the Panthers are giving up an average of 15 fantasy points to wide receivers. It is just as likely that Ryan will target TE Tony Gonzalez instead of White in the red zone. Look for White’s production to be down this week. He is still worth a WR2 play, but look for another option to fill your WR1 spot.

Tight Ends to Sit

Arizona Cardinals TE Ben Patrick has caught a touchdown pass in each of the last two weeks and is now on the fantasy radar. While this may be the case, this week his matchup indicates that he will not do it again. The Seahawks have given up two total touchdowns to tight ends over eight games this season. Avoid the temptation to pick him up and start him.

New York Jets TE Dustin Keller has been a little inconsistent this year. Expect Week Ten to be one of the down weeks for him. This week the Jets will play the Jacksonville Jaguars who have given up 292 receiving yards and only one touchdown to tight ends this season. Expect these numbers to hold. If you have another tight end option, use it.

Hey Chad. Looks a lot like last week, but I'm thinking there's a slight difference.

So I have two leagues. In the first, I'm pretty comfortable with Rivers, Gates, and Jackson against Philly and Deangelo Williams against Atlanta. But for 1 RB, 1 WR, and 1 RB/WR flex spots I have these guys to choose from:

RB:
Brandon Jacobs
Marion Barber
Marshawn Lynch
LeSean McCoy

WR:
Greg Jennings
Sims-Walker

What do you think?

In my other league, which 3 WRs would you pick from these?

Colston
Sims-Walker
Austin
Marshall

Also, which D/ST do you like?

Saints
Broncos

Thanks again. I had the high score in BOTH of my leagues this last weekend thanks in a very large part to your advice. I'm all ears.

McCoy has 2 great games this season when Westbrooke didn't play, when he scored a TD and rushed over 70 yards against the Chiefs and Giants. McCoy is the best pickup for the remainder of the season and fantasy playoffs. Wells and Arizona's run game continues to improve, and their schedule is very good.

Really trade Chris Johnson cause he has the Chargers and Seattle in the playoffs??? Thats insane, seattle is ranked in the middle rush defenses and the chargers have been shredded by opposing running backs all year. Also, Jake Delhomme and Matthew Stafford are starts??? Thats just crazy talk. Dude you're nuts.

Jacobs is on bye so that is out. San Diego has been good against the run and Westbrook is a WC in the Eagles running game this week. so I would sit McCoy as well.

That leaves Barber and Lynch for your RB spot. Lynch has the better match up versus Tennessee although Tennessees defense has been much improved since the bye and Buffallo is not that good of an offense. I would feel more comfortable starting Barber.

for WR Jennings is the better play over Sims Walker but in your situation I think you shoud starty both of them over Lynch.

League 2

Wow talk about a grouping of players that have tough matchups. in this situation it is more about which on you want to sit as opposed to wo you want to start.

Colson has the best matchup while Mile Austin has real good chemistry with Romo so I would start them both. That leaves Brandon Marshall and Sims Walker. It is a tough call as both have a so so QB but Marshall has a little more protection with Edir Royal as opposed to Sims Walker with Tor Holt.

Because of that I would sit Sims Walker and start Marshall.

Boith defenses are iintriguing as Denver is the sack artist team while New Orleans has been a takeaway machine. This week I would start Denver as they play a Redskins offense that should be missing Thier main weapon and a passing game that acks excitement.

Jay Cutler doesnt seem to have one go to receieer yet in CHicago his main target switches from week to week. SanFrancisco has been vulnerable to the pass and Hester hasnt had his turn as the guy in a few weeks. It is reasonable to start Hester to to try and capitalize on it. As for Joe Flacco on Monday Night football. The Ravens have a good offense and Cleveland in the Mangini era has started with a "thud" I expect The Ravens offense to exploit and beat down the Browns. I wouldn't start Flacco over the top 5 Qbs (Brady, Manning, Rivers, Romo, Brees) but I would start him in most othe rsituations.

TE: Witten or Shiancoe this week?

D/ST: CIN, ATL, or consider OAK or KC?

Thanks guys!!

Romo @ Green Bay and Palmer at Pittsburgh are two very tough match ups. Both Qbs could have low production days. Of the two I like Tony ROmo a little better. He has a few more weapons to be able to overcome the match up. He also plays great in November.
RE: Newffl

since it is a PP eague I would start Brent Celek over Visanthe Shiancoe. Shiancoe is a TD machng but he wont get you the bonuis points that a PPR league brings.

for your flex position in PPR leagues I highly suggest to sart a WR where you can.

For WR. I would start Austin Collie but moniter his injury status.. His is questionable for the week. These NE indy Games often get to be high scoring affairs.

as for yuor other WRs I would start Driver and Burrelson both are good options. DeSean Jackson will face a secondary that is one of the best vs. Wrs. Rather than risk McNabb not throwing to him I would avoid the situation and play your other veteran Wrs.

at RB Ron Brown is the better of the two Dolphins RBs so I would start him because he will have more opportunity to score points for you.
Who do I drop for a defense?

I have the Giants on a Bye, so I need to drop someone for a Defense. Who should I drop out of the following:

Earl Bennett (41 fantasy pts)
Antonio Bryant (32 fantasy pts)
Donnie Avery (32 fantasy pts)

I am in a huge league, so whoever I drop will most likely get scooped up by someone else :-/
RE: James

Witten until Oakland proves they can run the ball.

ALso I would start Rivers weekly despite matchups. Yes Phillip Rivers is that good.

Cutler doesnt normally target the same player two weekin a row in Chicago. s the odds of Olsen having a big week is not good at all. I would start hall of famer Tony Gonzalez.

for Roethlisberger vs Rodgers thier matchups Dallas and Cincinatti are giving up less than 1 fantasy pointper game difference between the two defenses vs QBs. Because of this you should start the more talented QB. I like Rodgers better than Roethlisberger. wso I would start him.
Thanks.

Yeah, I know I have bad matchups in league 2, but I also have Brees, AP (Min), and M. Turner in that league. I also have Forte. Would you play forte over one of my WRs (Colston, Marshall, Austin)?

I think Warner is the start this week. Flacco has a slightly better match up but he seems to be struggling a bit. I think Flacco will right the ship this week but I don't see a reason not to go with the safer play.

I know Jamaal Charles is the shiny new toy we all want to play with but I htink S-Jax is the better play. New Orleans is giving up over 20 points per game to running backs. Styeven Jackson is the main back in St Louis and should get the majority of the touches at RB. I wold start him.

Ward or Jackson.... this is a close call both are hot receivers, both have good QBs versus tough secondaries and both are playing at home. I wouldstart Jackson though because Phillip Rivers will have to rely on the plassing game more than Ben roethlisberger. . Rivers also is more of a stat machine though Roethlisberger is catching up.

LOL are tyou advertising on a rival site? I would advocate caution in such a statement about McCoy. The numbers this season show that when Westbrook is healthy he is gettign touches. This is because he is better at blitz pickups than McCoy is. I do expect Westbrook tp be banged up often and McCoy will get his chances. But he is not a blanket must start type of player from here on out.

I have also encouraged people to continue to hold McCoy through the season even when it is tough. so if they followed my advice he will not be on thier waiver wire.
RE: Larry

No not nuts. again as for QBs I am putting forth oprions for those who will not be weekly starting Drew brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Phillip Rivers, Aaron Rodhers, and Tony Romo. These starts are for the people who are using a quarterback bny committee approach,. They are not the great point producers but will be players who will put up moderate points and let them get by with superior RBs and Wrs but a lesser QB

As for Chris Johnson while you are correct for the season San Diego and Seattle dont have spectacular numbers but football is not static. San Diego especailly is nortorious for slow starts so let us insteal let us look over the last three weeks to get a feel what Seattle and San Diego might do later in the year. Seattle is 23 (16.8ppg) and San Diego is 25th (14.3 ppg) in fantasy points allowed to running backs

Now these numbers are over two games. so why not look at the last four games or five weeks of the NFL season Seattle is ranked 28th (13.7 PPG) and San Diego 29th (13.7 ppg) in fantasy points allowed to runnign backs!!! These numbers are in yardage leagues.

Remember I suggest trading Johnson ONLY if your playoffs are in weeks 16 and 17. What good will it fdo if you get there and lay an egg because Johnson does not do well. call it forward planning.

if the three Wrs you list Miles Austin has the worst match up. I still like that Romo will throw to austin and possible catch a touchdown. Still, I think it is safer to Start Welker and Ocho CInco so I would sit Austin.

I believe you start your studs when you can with TE and that would be Jason Witten. Green bay is still in the top half of the league in fantasy points allowed to TE. I would start Witten.

as for a defense stick with the two you have. I would start Cincinatti and look for them to sack Big ben who holds the ball too long

The RB list will shuffle from week to week for this week I would rank them

Jamaal Charles
Laurence Maroney
Justin Fargas
Darren McFadden
Shonn Greene
Correll Buckhalter
Chris Wells
Justin Forsett

Hey guys i'm calling on yall once again for some insight into my fantasy matchups! could use the help, i'm 4-5 in my league and only 3 weeks until playoffs. My league starts 2 QBs 3 WRs 2 RB and a W/R. Return points go towards the individual players also

for my QBs I have Big Ben, Matt Ryan, Matt Hasselback, and Mcnabb. Dallas tore apart mcnabb last week so i'm planning on sitting him and starting ben and matt ryan, however hasselback did put up alot of points for me last week and I have a good feeling he might do the same against inconsistant ARI.

at the WR position I have Vincent Jackson, Nate Burleson, Johnny Knox, Randy Moss, and Sims Walker. As is, I have Sims Walker on the bench and only playing 2 RBs.

and finally at RB i dropped kevin smith and picked up tim hightower, and also have Thomas Jone, LT, and Westbrook

Not sure if hightower was the best pickup for me but I was afraid to pick up fred jackson (buf) or Knoshown Moreno (spelling?) because they split time and I dont want to drop any of my current players because they have descent matchups going into playoff season

thanks once again

I'm really stuck this week with some questionable starters. I've got Portis out(inj) and Andre Johnson & A.Bradshaw on bye. That leaves me with:
L.Betts RB vs. Den
L.McCoy RB @ SD
R.Mendenhall RB vs. Cin
R. Moss WR @ Ind.
I'm wondering if I should pick-up K. Moreno RB Den or Shonne Green RB NYJ. I'm thinking of dropping C. Portis. Would you pick up one of these guys and perhaps plug him in Betts spot?? Thanks for any help. (No PPR)

*Chris Johnson, R.Rice, B.Wells, J.Charles
*T.Gonzalez (for sure its the only TE I have)
*M.Stover(only K I have)

RE: Gary tough choices

IN a yardage League Moreno loses value because he will not get points for receptions and with him splitting time with C. Buckhalter and the hot hand getting dell Betts. Over the last 5 weeks both Washington and Denversa defenses have been similar in what they are allowing to fantasy Rbs on average. Because of this I can not suggest you pick up Moreno for Betts. It is less likely Moreno will outperform Betts.

As for Shonn Greene . I do believe Thomas Jones is the main back in Ney York. Alsi Miami is similar to his opponent this week. I would think Greene will produce similar to his 8 carry for 18 yard performance. (I do expect him to rush more than 18 yards though!)

Brian Westbrook is expected to play but split carries . This limits McCOys value this week San Diego has been a tough defense vs RB scoring lately as well so McCoy looks more like a desparate play this week.

Because of this I would start Betts and Mendenhall and hope the potential 20+ carries for Betts will translate into some nice stats.

If you have to start 2 RBs and McCoy I would pick up Moreno for this week becaus ehe has abetter chance to put up stats this week. DO Not drop Portis for him though though he is an old 26 he i still a very viable RB2 when he plays and I think he will be back in action in week 11 or week 12. If you have a questionable qb OR wr I would drop one of them before McCOy. If you must I think you can drop McCOy late tonite (Sat or early Sunday ad due to a bad match up this week I think you can get him back on waivers. You will want to drop because Moreno will play SD the following week and that is a very bad match up for him and you will want Betts on roster for week 11 in case Portis does not play then Being comfined to bed rest on Thursday by doctors orders means it is a bad concussion and if I had to bet I will bet he (Portis) will miss week 11 as well.

with the return of Troy Polamalu to the luineup ion Pittsburgh the defense has gone from horrible vs the pass to very good. so Palmer is a not so good match up. Tony Romo s in the same boat with the Green Bay defense but Brett Fave was able to disect the Packers secondary and I think Romo could do so aswell. I would start Romo

I htik you need to start Ward o a wekly basis until he cools down. I also think Boldin has an incredible match up vs Seattle since he practiced all week. I think he is ready to go s start him as well.

Finally I like Sydney Rice at Favres fv target in Minnisota. so I would start him versus the Lions.

For RB Chris Johnson and ray Rice are must starts on a weekly basis.

Given this is a standard league with no PPRI would recomend playing a RB if you have a viable one. Jamal Charles looks reasonable even if he splits a few carries. He is playing a Raiders defense who isvulnerable to running backs. so I would start him at a flex spot.

McFadden or DeAngelo Williams with his questionable knee?
Who to start

Should I start Flacco this week over Tom Brady? I think Brady has a tougher game this week with Indy. Flacco has the Browns.

As of 9.27am eastern, DeAngelo is still a dreaded game time decision. If he can go he'll be a must start, especially over McFadden whose role on a terrible team is completely uncertain. All I can say is check the live chat and we should know by noon.

I do like Flacco this week but Tom Brady is an all time stud and a must start in any matchup.

Dave Richard of CBS sports has an excellent breakdown of the Pats-Colts rivalry at http://fantasynews.cbssports.com/fantasyfootball/story/12513549/history-lessons-breaking-down-pats-colts . Bottom line, don't worry about Brady this week.

I'd rate them Mendenhall > Williams > Harvin > Burleson this week, although all are very good plays.

sorry, ment to ask: would you drop antonio bryant for either who are available: lance long or earl bennett? I could just hold on to bryant, but his knee is a major concern moving forward and i am thinking i should drop just to add a healthy body to my line up... thoughts?

I like the idea of dropping Bryant, I don't really like Bennett or Long all that much. Between the two I would probably go with Bennett. What are some of the other WRs available?

Not a lot of strong choices. I think Maurice Stovall is a sleeper. Freeman seemed to like looking for him and they could develop some chemistry. I think of all the players you listed, he has the best chance to be consistent throughout the rest of the season. Also see how Jordy Nelson responds from his knee injury this week, if he starts seeing the field he could put up some numbers for an explosive Packer passing offense.

How do you think of my waiver queue. I'm hoping to get 2 players, dropping A.Smith QB SF & D.Henderson WR NO. I've ranked my choices;
1 K.Moreno RB DEN
2 J.Forsett RB SEA
3 M. Sims-Walker WR JAC
4 J.Charles RB KC
5 J.Snelling RB ATL

I think oyu got the waivers right if you need a RB if you are looking for best player available I would place Sims Walker ahead of Forsett.

early on I am thinking J JOnes will be out for a while allowing for Forsett to make some hay in the comming weeks but there still is an off chance Jones will return this fantasy season makeing Sims Walker the safer waiver pickup over Forsett

I think dropping Ward is reasonable if I h ad to make a choice I would pick up Justin Forsett first. I have been hearing good things about him for a whhile now. Snelling is still a decent pick up my understanding is Turner has a high ankle sprain and you can't really brace a spain like that with that ankle unstable he will be less than effective for the next few weeks allowing Snelling to have an opportunity to produce.
